Waterless Car Spray Cleaners – Why use them?

I’ve been asked a few times if there is any benefit in using waterless spray cleaners and my answer is that it really depends on the person and how much they love their car.

I find people who love driving around in a shiny car all of the time, it just makes them happy and then I know others who could just as happily drive around in a grime covered car with Macca’s packets strewn throughout, not my cup of tea, but each to their own I say!

The waterless spray cleaners are a quick and easy way to keeping your car looking bright and shiny all year round with a minimum of work once or twice a week, as opposed to the hose down, sponge and bucket efforts you might do once a month.

Waterless spray cleaners generally consist of a high-lubricity pre-mixed spray detailer that allows you to saturate and clean your car panel by panel, leaving behind a beautiful gleaming car.

Even moreso when you purchase the cleaner with a built-in wax component.

This isn’t the cleaner you want when you’ve just come back from mud larking all weekend, waterless spray cleaners are most effective when there is only a light dirt accumulation and are to be used on a regular basis.

If you have been mud larking, try out your local service station car wash!

One of the most important aspects of this method, is choosing your cloth wisely.

You should use a very soft cloth with a deep nap as this will provide room for dirt to collect in without rubbing it back onto the paint.

A thin towel with a flat nap will only push the dirt back onto the paint as you wipe, so this is a very important choice.

Having decided on a quality cloth, get used to folding it into 8 sides if possible, as this will allow you to get around your whole car using clean parts of the cloth at every point.

Now you’re ready to clean!

Most people will start at the top of their car and work their way down, as generally speaking, your car is cleanest at the top and dirtiest at the bottom.

Generously spray the roof of your car and use your cloth to wipe clean.

Ensure you only spray enough cleaner that you can wipe down before it dries, i.e. don’t spray your whole car and then start wiping, this is a panel by panel task.

Continue down your car (windows included) utilising and changing the 8 sides of the cloth as each becomes filled with dirt and grit.

You will find you can clean the top section of your car with 2-3 sides of the cloth but the bottom section may require more sides as it is dirtier.

One of the most important points I can let you know is DO NOT use the same cloth on your car as you use for your wheels.

As you are driving, your wheels will become covered in brake dust and the last thing you want to be doing is using your wheel cloth on your paint work, it just won’t be pretty!

This is an easy fix though, just put aside a few of your older cloths and use them on your wheels, just make sure you don’t mix them up next time around.
