Engine Oils

Do you remember an old TV advertisement crapping on about “oils aint oils”?

I can’t remember which engine oil crowd it was, but I had an oil selling rep visit me yesterday selling his products.

And I’m glad he did.

You see in my cars warehouse in Brisbane, I have decided to carry out my own basic engine servicing.

And after Tony’s visit yesterday (the rep), I learnt a few things.

I’ve made this decision because after asking around, many mechanics use really shit oil but sell it in your service charge at a premium price.

But what is it that makes a crappy oil?

Well so it turns out it is a lot of factors.

The price is just one.

Like everything in life, you get what you pay for.

This is true whether you are buying or selling cars, or changing the oil in them for sure.

But you may have noticed the many choices of oil grades that are available.

Anyone who has ever even strolled down the engine oil land at Supercheap, Repco or Autobarn will see many choices.

I have – and I thought I’d need to be a chemist to know which one is best for my car(s).

There are many viscosity grades. Which means how thick the oil is.

Thicker oils are better in hotter climates.

Thinner oils are better in cooler climates.

And some engines need a thinner grade oil to circulate best on startup.

And other cars, especially Europeans and Diesels need higher grade synthetic oils.

So what does all this (and this is really just the tip of the iceberg from what I could absorb), matter for buying and selling cars in Brisbane?

Your car if it is well maintained with a service history is always worth more than an equivalent car that has not been maintained well.

Cars which have not had their oil changed regularly will build up sludge inside the crankcase and wear much faster than a car which has enjoyed regular services.

This is one of the first things I will ask and check on when coming to inspect your car to see if I want to buy it for cash or not.

It’s not the frequency of servicing though and this is my point of the article.

From now on I will be checking, and I suggest you do too, that the mechanic has used the CORRECT type of oil for your car.

It can make a big difference.

However well you have – or maybe have not servicedyour car with engine oil over the years, by all means give me a call on 0411 362 229 and I might buy your car for cash in Brisbane and surrounding areas including the Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast.
