Be organised when selling your car quickly.

It is a pretty easy process, but there are a few simple things you need to do.

I’ve written other articles on some of the pitfalls and hassles of selling your car privately.

It can be a nuisance going through the advertising process, appointments and tyre kickers just to get knocked down on price anyway.

The service I offer is quick and painless.

Just a call to me, I come and look at the car (sometimes even if you are not actually there but I can inspect the car in a driveway), we agree a price, I pay in cash or direct deposit transfer, then I either drive the car away or arrange a tow truck to so it for me.

In most cases this hardly impacts on your time at all.

But whether you sell a used car to me or to anyone else, there are a few simple things you need to take care of.

Firstly, me or anyone else is going to ask you questions about the model and history of the car.

Have these details ready.

Also to sell the car, a copy of a current or old registration paper is required for proof of ownership (although there are ways via Qld Transport to confirm this if you cannot produce it – it just take a little extra time).

Have any receipts of previous work done and the logbooks in the car. This will help you get a better price. If you don’t have these things, I will still buy my car in Brisbane for you, but it not worth as much to me because it is a risk to the end owner.

Although you don’t need to worry about cleaning the car because I can see through these sorts of details, it is always a good idea to have anything you sell presented in the best possible light.

Cancel the car OFF your toll account.

GoVia may continue to charge for your car going backwards and forwards through tolls even if the new owner does the right thing and change it over to their account. I’ve had this happen to me before. I tried to add a car onto my account, but unless the previous owner instructed the car to be taken OFF theirs first, it stayed there and was the first account debited on each trip.

Also don’t forget to remove the car from your insurance policy. There is no point paying for insurance on a car you no longer own!
