Do a search on CarSales, like I just did, and there are 152 2005 Ford Falcon XR6s for sale.
When you are trying to sell a car, whether it is to me, someone who deals in cars, or retail on a website like CarSales, ask yourself this:
How is my car any different to all the other ones for sale?
Although price is very important, it is definitely not the only factor that will sell your car a bit more quickly.
Here is a video of the Falcon XR6 a young guy wanted to sell last week and I paid cash on the spot for it.
Apart from making the little mistake of calling this a UTE, what did you see that made this XR6 a bit different?
Firstly the wheels stand out.
You could say the colour, but it is a fact XR6 and XR8 models came out with some pretty funky colours so that does not count as anything different.
Low kms is another factor.
Allow me to digress onto a little side story to highlight this point.
My parents just bought a 2003 Hyundai Getz.
If you check Redbook, CarSales or anywhere else, they will advise this car is only worth about $1,500.
They paid $6,500 and consider it a bargain.
Why?
It only had 16,500kms on the clock and had recently got its timing belt changed and cruise control retro-fitted.
The moral of this example?
Every car needs to be assessed on its merits and what makes it even just a little bit different to all the others may put more money in your pocket.

Smelly cars are not nice.
Smoker’s cars combined with smelly are almost impossible to fix.
But if your car has just been sitting around locked up for a while, it will no doubt become a little musty.
Some cars just have a “manufacturer’s smell” about them.
What??
When you’ve been around as many cars as I have, believe it or not, you can recognise some cars just have a particular smell about them.
These cars include Holden Astra/Vectra, Mitsubishi Magna and Mazda Astina just to name a few.
It’s uncanny really.
The AC ducting and system is one quick and easy place to start.
Now it is not just a matter of putting a spray in there and turning it on.
The selection of anti-bacterial spray is important.
If you go to AutoBarn or Repco, there are some specifically made products made for this purpose.
Or you van get them online – but they are north of $50 a can.
Which I think is too expensive.
In the past I have used good old Glenn 20 or the equivalent sprays you can get at the supermarket.
But recently I have discovered a quite potent product you should be able to get for under $20 that is excellent for this purpose.
It’s a full size can but its spray is thick and only lasts about 25 seconds in total.
It is made by AutoSmart and is called “odour eliminator”.
The method of getting the maximum benefit for cleaning your AC ducts is as the the video.
The recirculation air intake vent is nearly universally in the passenger side footwell.
When running the AC at full blast in recirc mode, spray whatever you are using around this area to be sucked into the system.
Something the video does not mention is to repeat the same process with the AC on full heating mode after doing the cooling mode.
The end of the video also shows you how to do the clean through the external air intake.
I always do this on heat also.
Follow the instructions, and you will have a MUCH better smelling car.
Of course, do a usual clean including a shampoo and vacuum of the carpets.
If you’re fussy, you may consider taking the seats out to do a proper job.
Good idea – BUT – make sure you do this with no power and all possible capacitors drained.
This is so you don’t activate the airbag activation sensors.
To do this, put your lights on high beam, then disconnect the negative terminal of the battery.
This will drain all the charge in the system.

Sometimes people just cannot sell their cars quickly.
And that includes myself.
In the past I have bought a great car with all the right things – e.g. low kms, good logbooks, no damage, etc.
But for weird unknown reasons, they can sometimes sit without much interest for months and months.
There is just no rhyme nor reason sometimes in this business.
This was the situation with the seller of this beautiful RX8.
The people who owned it needed to sell their car in a few weeks – but it didn’t happen for them.
They had the usual phone calls and emails, but people pulled out or didn’t turn up to the appointments to view.
(this happens all the time in this business)
To be fair, this type of car gets its fair amount of tyre kickers as well.
And also those who have good intentions, fall in love with it, but then after protracted finance enquiry, just can’t afford it.
It was pretty dirty when they brought it in to me, and there was a small bit of paint missing on the front bumper and it was slightly overdue for a service.
So I have since done the service, and gradually got around to the few small cosmetic items needed for sale preparation.
I utilised this time to also drive it around for a few months because IT IS SO MUCH FUN TO DRIVE.

Phillipa called me after Googling “Cash For Cars Brisbane”.

When she brought it in, a light was cracked, it hadn’t been serviced in 20,000kms and needed quite a few bits and pieces done for roadworhty.

And I do a lot of sourcing and installation of bits and pieces in-house which saves quite a bit of money than what most people would pay retail.

I appraise to buy used cars every day in Brisbane.
But sometimes I wonder how others do it.
Every now and again I find my way to YouTube and look at what other people do.
Here is an example I want to talk about:
This is just one video on the subject out of quite literally hundreds to choose from.
I follow my own procedures but I always like watching these because every time I learn something new.
It is a very long video and although the guy seems to know his mechanical stuff, he isn’t much of a cameraman!
But it doesn’t matter.
It is just a good video to go through to help you decide if the car you are looking at is worth the asking price.
The car in this video although in the USA, is a Camry which are ubiquitous here in Australia too.
He starts by looking around the car and seeing the general condition of the body.
I do the same thing tapping areas of the panels listening for “deadened” bits which may be hiding filler and/or fibreglass.
I like his method of testing the struts/shock absorbers. A simple push down on each corner can easily reveal an expensive suspension requirement. If the car bounces, it needs new ones.
Another simple test to do is the see if the wheels move at all laterally. This could mean worn bushes and other suspension related problems which add up in mechanical repair work needed for roadworthy or safety certificate.
Engine mounts are not an incredibly expensive item to fix up, but pushing on the engine and checking the mounts you can see for wear and cracking is an excellent idea too.
A simple look around for existing oil leaks is a good thing to do – check to see if there is any built up grease or leaks forming underneath – therefore bringing a flashlight is a good idea. The inbuilt light in your smartphone can also be used at a pinch.
Overall an excellent video and worth the look. I’m sure you can find a shorter one, but this one goes through a good actual example of a Toyota Camry being considered to buy.

This recent video especially piqued my curiosity.
I wondered how you could make money changing your brakes?
I recently changed a full set of four brake rotors and pads and I just threw out the rotors.
They are pretty heavy and made from cast iron.
By throwing them out, I have effectively made someone else some money!
The point Chris makes in the video is if you reserve a small part of your garage to keeping old pieces of metal, then once a year – or more often depending how much work you do, take it to the scrap metal yard and get paid for it.
Things worth decent money are the heavier items like brake rotors, wheel bearings, starter motors, alternators, body parts, etc.
Old batteries are also worth a few dollars.
In fact a door knocker came by our warehouse just yesterday offering up to $10 for old batteries.
Also on my motorcycle ride each weekend, I see a handwritten sign saying cash for batteries.
These people must recondition them and sell them again for profit.
Scrap metal may not be worth a fortune, but it all adds up.

When I can, I like to write up a few ideas that if they don’t exactly add value to a used car, they certainly help to sell one.
This guy has an excellent YouTube channel – Chris Fix.
I’ve used his videos for years to remind myself of a few tips when fixing – or for that matter assessing cars to buy.
I find his videos short as they can be, with good close up filming and an easy step-by-step process to follow for most jobs.
In coming weeks, I might write up and advise of a few of his videos that have saved me a lot of money – and helped to sell a few cars along the way.
This one is a pretty simple one.
And it also helps when you see through the wheels, the back end is nice and today as well.
What I mean by the back end, is the braking unit you can generally see through most alloy wheels.
The specific components I am referring to are the rotors (the discs) and the calipers which house the brake pads.
High end car manufacturers pay a lot of attention to these details.
Next time you are walking past a BMW, a Porsche or a Mercedes Benz, have a look through the wheels, and notice how nice all of this equipment is generally presented.
And usually with some branding and contrasting colour.
When I say branding, you may often see customised braking systems. One such iconic brand is “Brembo”.
A Brembo system can often cost in the thousands of dollars to install, and is a premium brand used on many motorcycles, as well as SS Commodores and other performance vehicles.
But you don’t have to spend thousands to get the quality looks.
Follow the instructions in the video.
Remember to use high temperature caliper paint. You can get this from any auto store like SuperCheap, Repco or Autobarn.
Rotors and calipers get very hot at operating conditions, and normal paint will simply peel off in short time.
And prepare your surface well.
This can be a bit tedious, but it is well worth it.
Again, if the surface has a lot of rust and brake dust on it, the paint will bond with this and not the steel and will therefore flake.
A great tool t use for this job is a rotary steel brush disc.
I use compressed air to run mine, but if you run down to Bunnings, you can cheaply buy extensions that will attach to any drill.
This will do a good job in getting most of the contaminants off.
Then simple wipe your surfaces down with a good wax, grease and dirt remover, then apply coats of paint as necessary.
The more coats, the better the result so take your time doing this.
Usually you can get away with holding a piece of paper behind your target to stop overspray.
The good thing about painting calipers is you don’t need to be ultra careful.
It usually doesn’t matter if you get a bit of black overspray either on the face or behind the rotors.
If you get overspray on the rotors, the brake pads will take this off in the first few applications of braking.
But take it easy in the first 20 kms or so of driving al the same.
Whilst you have your wheels off, it is an easy job to clean up the inside of the whole wheel arch and paint this black too.
You can use any old matt black spray paint to make the wheel area really look the goods.
